Abstract

This article investigates the influences that victimizations in and outside school may have over teachers’ legitimacy and adolescents’ rule-violating behavior. In dialogue with the legal socialization literature, the study uses data from a survey conducted with adolescents living in the city of São Paulo. Findings show that black students, boys and students of public schools are more exposed to both neighborhood and school victimization. Adolescents victims of school violence are less willing to legitimize their teachers. They are also more likely to engage in rule-violating behavior. The study reveals that developing a school environment free of violence may reduce the impact that neighborhood violence has over the relationship between adolescents and teacher, as well as over adolescents’ rule-violating behavior.
