A PORTRAIT OF VIOLENCE AND CRIMINALITY IN THE LEGAL AMAZONÔNIA LEGAL

The main objective of this study was to investigate the core elements related to violence in the Le gal Amazon area, spanning the period between 2002 and 2019. The focal point of the research was centered around homicide rates, aiming to comprehend the intrinsic interconnections between these rates and the socioeconomic aspects surrounding the victims. To achieve this, the entropy balancing method proposed by Hainmueller & Xu (2013) was adopted. The key findings highlight that disparities in opportunities, evident through low educational attainment, coupled with the influence of race/ethnicity and victims’ age, play a dominant role in the backdrop of high violence and criminality. More specifically, simply not being white increases the likelihood of being a homicide victim in the region by about 44%, when compared to the impact of educational level. Moreover, this effect is three times more pronounced than that related to occupation. Lastly, the combination of being young, belonging to a non-white ethnicity, and having limited educational levels significantly intensifies the probability of becoming a homicide victim in the region. When these attributes are combined with other factors, for instance, being male, unmarried, and a migrant, the current configuration seems to almost inevitably predict a tragic outcome, namely, death by homicide, for individuals exhibiting these characteristics.
