OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES FOR CONDUCTING CRIMINAL FIRE INVESTIGATIONS IN BUILDINGS

Abstract

The present study aims to identify guidelines for carrying out Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with an integrated approach aimed at forensic criminal investigations in the area of building fires. The research has a methodological design of the case study type, of an exploratory nature, and at the organizational analysis level. For the development of the work, semi-structured interviews were conducted with official criminal experts working in the area during data collection, in addition to direct observation of technical standards, legislation, and international manuals. Subsequently, through the method of content comparison, the points of intersection between the responses obtained in the interviews and the guidelines found in the theoretical framework were identified for the three phases of the forensic activity studied, which were: forensic fire investigation, integrated fire investigation, and collection and preservation of fire evidence.

Author Biographies

Roberta de Freitas Godoy, Polícia Científica do Pará

She holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Federal University of Pará (2018), a specialist degree in forensic investigations and assessments from UNOPAR (2021), and a master’s degree in forensic sciences from the Federal University of Southern and Southeastern Pará (2024). She currently serves as an official criminal investigator with the Pará State Forensic Police (PCIPA).

José Alberto Silva De Sá, Universidade Do Estado Do Pará/ Polícia Científica Do Pará

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of the Amazon (1992). Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Pará (2004). Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Pará (2011). Postdoctoral degree in Geoinformatics from the National Institute for Space Research (2018). He works as a forensic expert with the Pará Scientific Police and as a professor at the State University of Pará.

Fernanda Carla Lima Ferreira, Universidade Federal Do Sul E Sudeste Do Pará

Recipient of a CNPq Productivity, Technological Development, and Innovative Extension Fellowship – Level 1D. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Federal University of Pará (2004), a Master’s degree in Physics from the Federal University of Sergipe (2008), and a Ph.D. in Physics from the Federal University of Sergipe (2011).

Rennedy da Mota Macedo, polícia científica do pará (PCEPA)

Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and Biochemistry from the Faculty of Imperatriz (FACIMP) (2009), specialist in mental health from UFMA (2011), specialist in hospital pharmacy from Uninter (2015), and Master’s degree in Forensic Sciences from UNIFESSPA (2024). He is currently an official forensic expert with the Pará Scientific Police (PCIPA).
