Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The author must agree with this Journal principles before submitting the article: unprecedented, originality, academical integrity, anti-plagiarism and human beings research ethical. Only the articles that follow all the principles will be considered for evaluation. Also, it is necessarily following the format orientations, explained below.
  • The paper should not contain any kind of identification of the authors, such as NAME, INSTITUTION, or TITLE OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT to which the author(s) is (are) affiliated.
  • RBSP only publishes texts in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
  • When submitting the text, ALL authors and co-authors must be listed. Inform full name, mini-biography institutional affiliation, their highest education, city and state of residence, ORCID (when entering author/co-author, select the Send e-mail to request ORCID authorization from the contributor box) and contact e-mail - this information is mandatory for publication. If there is funding for the work to be published, the institution must also be indicated.
  • The manuscript must be submitted in its final version, with spelling and grammatical corrections in the corresponding language and without proofreading marks. The length of the article should be a minimum of 5,000 words and a maximum of 10,000 words, with spaces, excluding graphs, tables, title, abstract and references. Articles should be submitted in Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1.5 spacing. Articles not complying with the submission guidelines will not be considered; such manuscripts will be rejected immediately by the editors;
  • The abstract should be up to 1,000 characters with spaces, in the same configuration as the article. The abstract must specify: problem, central argument of the article, substantive contribution to the field of literature in which it falls, empirical materials or instances, and methodological choices. The title, abstract and keywords must be in two languages, one of which must be English. The second language may be Portuguese or Spanish, corresponding to the body of the text. Titles and abstracts must be entered in the file and on the platform when submitting the text.
  • Textual quotations must appear between quotation marks in the body of the text, when shorter than two lines, and in a new indented paragraph, when longer than two lines. Quotations must be translated into the language used in the article, indicating in a footnote the translator when the first quotation is translated. If it is the author himself, say "my translation" or "our translation";
  • Place only supplementary information and information of a substantive nature as footnotes, not exceeding three lines;
  • In the case of articles with tables, charts, graphs and figures, each one must be sent also in Microsoft Excel, PNG or JPG formats. In each one, inform the source used, including when it is an own elaboration (for example, own elaboration based on data from Anuário Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (2020), or own elaboration based on (Costa, 2020). Even when the data come from a project coordinated by the author, the name of the project must be informed as the source (do not directly identify the author in this citation).
  • The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in Author Guidelines, on the About the Journal page.
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF format.
  • URLs for the references were given when possible.
  • It is desirable that the submitted papers have up to five authors. We ask that if the paper has more than one author, the number of authors must be justified, as well as the contributions of each one at the time of submission. The criteria for defining co-authorship are found below.
  • Articles submitted to RBSP must be original and unpublished, that is, not being published or being simultaneously evaluated by other journals or editorial boards. Preprints are considered publications and violate the double-blind peer review policy.
  • The authors and coauthors declare that they have not published in the last two years in Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública and that they do not have another text under evaluation at the moment of the new submission.
  • The contributions of each author will be sent in the Comments to editor box, specifying the criteria as described on the Submission rules and guidelines for authors page.
  • Before submitting the text, make sure that an anonymized footnote is added stating whether the text has been presented at a scientific event (but not published in the proceedings) or is the result of coursework, dissertation or theses.

Author Guidelines

Submission Criteria

The Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública accepts works by authors with at least a college degree that discuss Public Security, covering Law, Anthropology, Economy, History, Sociology and other areas of social sciences and applied social sciences.

Thus, original studies are published, with a minimum of 5000 words (not counting title, abstract, bibliographical references and appendixes) in Portuguese, English and Spanish, under the categories: i) original articles; ii) technical notes; and iii) interviews.

As part of the criteria of the Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública we declare that contributions made by authors external to the editorial team and the publishing entity are valued. To submit work to our journal, please visit the submissions page.

Note: The main author with the minimum degree should submit the text if there are co-authors without the required degree.

Two-year period between publications and simultaneous submissions:

Authors and co-authors submitting a text to the Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública may only do so under the following conditions:

1.If they have no submissions at any stage of the RBSP editorial flow (submission, evaluation and text editing); or

2. After the first text submitted to RBSP has been rejected; or

3. Two years after the publication of the first submission to RBSP, if it is accepted and published.

Explanation:

  • After submitting a text to the journal, the author must wait for the result of the review process before making a new submission;
  • If the text is accepted for publication but has not yet been published, the author must wait for the text to be published;
  • If the text is rejected, the author may submit a new text immediately;
  • If the text is accepted and published by the journal, the author must wait a period of two years from the date of publication before submitting a new text;
  • Concurrent submissions are not allowed;
  • The exchange of positions for the publication of articles is prohibited. This means that a text A, with lead author X and co-author Y, cannot be submitted at the same time as a text B, with lead author Y and co-author X.

This rule aims to promote the diversity of authors and to guarantee an adequate time interval between publications, so that other authors have the opportunity to publish their work in the Journal. Non-compliance will result in refusal of the author's resubmission.

Submission Requirements for Images and Photographs

The Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública (RBSP) recommends that the use of images and photographs be restricted to situations in which they are of extreme importance to the findings and discussions in the articles and texts submitted. It is essential to emphasize the need to take care regarding the disclosure of people's identities and the attribution of authorship to the photographs. In general, the RBSP adopts a policy of avoiding the inclusion of images, due to the ethical issues involved, as well as the costs associated with editing and layout of the texts.

Bibliographical References

References to authors in the text should follow the pattern (author, year) or (author, year: page), as in the examples: (Costa, 2020) or (Costa, 2020, p. 10). If there is more than one title of the same author in the same year, they are differentiated by a letter after the date: (Costa, 2020a), (Costa, 2020b) etc.

The bibliographical references should be cited at the end of the article, obeying the following criteria, following the NBR 6023:2002, of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT):

Book: author's last name (upper case) /LETTER/ followed by the name (upper and lower case) / THEN/ title of the work in bold letters / THEN/ name of the translator / THEN/ edition number, if not the first edition /LETTER/ place of publication / TWO POINTS/ name of the publisher /LETTER/ date / THEN.

Article: last name of the author, followed by the name (as in the previous item) / THEN/ title of the article / THEN/ name of the journal in bold /BRIGHT/ volume of the journal /BRIGHT/ issue number /BRIGHT/ date /BRIGHT/ page numbers / THEN.

Chapter: author's last name, followed by the name (as in the previous items) / THEN/ title of the chapter / THEN/ in / TWO POINTS/ author's last name (in uppercase) / THEN/ followed by the name (upper and lower case) / THEN/ title of the work in boldface / THEN/ place of publication / TWO POINTS/ name of the publisher / THEN/ date / THEN.

Collection: last name of the organizer followed by the name (as in the previous items) / THEN/ title of the collection in bold letters / THEN/ name of the translator / THEN/ number of the edition, if it is not the first / THEN/ place of publication / THEN/ name of the publisher / THEN/ date / THEN.

Academic theses: author's last name, followed by the name (as in the previous items) / THREE POINTS/ title of the thesis in bold letters / THREE POINTS/ number of pages / THREE POINTS/ academic degree to which it refers / THREE POINTS/ institution in which it was presented / THREE POINTS/ date / THREE POINTS.

Charts and Tables

The inclusion of charts or tables must follow the following guidelines:

a) Charts, maps, tables etc. in a separate Excel or similar file, with clear indications throughout the text of where they should be included.
b) References to authors in the text should be in the form (author, date) or (author, date, page).
c) Footnotes should be limited to complementary information of a substantive nature and should not exceed 3 lines.

The bibliographical criteria of Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública is based on NBR 6023:2002, of the Brazilian Association of Technical Norms (ABNT).

Estimated Time for Paper Evaluation and Publication

Acceptance of text submission by the editors. Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the editorial board within 30 days.

Each reviewer has an average of 60 days to verify the relevance of the article to the editorial policy, theoretical and methodological adequacy, and contribution to the area of public security.

The revision of the manuscript, according to the opinions issued, takes 45 days.

The respective publication takes about 18 (eighteen) months. 

Definition of Authorship and Co-Authorship:
Persons designated as authors and coauthors must have played an active and significant role in the development of the paper, enabling them to take public responsibility for the content. Author/coauthor qualification requires meeting at least two of the following criteria:
(a) conception and design:
Authors must have contributed substantially to the conception and design of the study. This should include planning, choice of methodologies, and data collection.
b) Data analysis and interpretation.
The authors should have participated in the analysis of the data, quantitative or qualitative, interpretation of the results, and discussion of the findings.
c) Writing of the manuscript or critical review:
Authors must have actively participated in the writing of the manuscript or critical review of the content. This involves writing or making a significant contribution to the writing of the text, reviewing draft versions, and providing important intellectual insights.

Final review and approval:
Please be advised that all authors must have reviewed the manuscript and approved the final version of the article to be submitted for publication. This ensures that all authors are aware of the content of the article and agree to its publication.

Furthermore, we advise that it is expressly important that, in the case of co-authored submissions, the individual contributions of each author be indicated. This can be done in a message/observation to the journal editor at the time of submission.

Articles

They should be preceded by a brief abstract in Portuguese and English.

Keywords should be highlighted (words or expressions that express the central ideas of the text), which can facilitate later research of the work in the library.

Articles written in Portuguese, English and Spanish will be accepted.

No royalties or remuneration will be due for the publication of papers in our journal, in any form of printed (paper) or electronic (Internet, etc.) media.

The simple sending of the original for appreciation implies authorization for publication by the journal, if it obtains a favorable opinion.

Reviews

  • Book Reviews

Reviews will be accepted of books published primarily in Portuguese, or in English or Spanish, no more than three years ago on topics related to public security. The reviews must comply with ABNT standards, as well as:

  • Contain the full reference of the book; including page numbers; contain a title in English and Portuguese of up to 50 characters with spaces;
  • Be written in Portuguese;
  • It must contain between 10,000 and 20,000 characters with spaces;
  • Include summaries in Portuguese and English, of up to 1000 characters, stating what the review is about (for example, what the selected work is about, whether the review is a critical review, a summary, whether it relates it to the discussion in the field of public security, etc);
  • Include the bibliographical reference of the work at the beginning of the text;
  • Limit footnotes to strictly necessary comments.
  • RBSP only accepts one author for reviews, with a minimum master's degree.

After analysis of compliance with our standards and scope, all manuscripts will be sent for blind peer review.

Technical Notes

Configuram uma seção das edições da RBSP em que se valoriza experiências de operadores(as) e trabalhadores(as) do campo da segurança pública. Espera-se que os trabalhos possam contribuir na construção de novos padrões de práticas profissionais na área, bem como qualificar a formulação de políticas públicas específicas. Nesta seção, são aceitos trabalhos teóricos e empíricos, que se relacionem com atividades práticas na área da segurança pública (como uso de determinados equipamentos ou a atuação de certa equipe em circunstâncias específicas).  Sugere-se observar recomendações para a elaboração de artigos científicos ná página Sobre a revista, de modo a conferir robustez aos trabalhos.

Special Issue: Violence and Crime in the Amazon Region

It is with great satisfaction that we invite the academic community and public security professionals to submit scientific articles and technical notes for the special issue - Violence and Crime in the Amazon Region. The special supplement will be coordinated by Edson Marcos Leal Soares Ramos and Silvia dos Santos de Almeida, members of the Graduate Program in Public Security at the Federal University of Pará.

In recent years the violence in the Amazon has seen a 47.3% jump in intentional violent deaths, and violence against indigenous people has increased by 295%. According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, moreover, today Brazil is the fourth most dangerous country for environmental and human rights activists, as could be seen in the case of the murder of indigenous activist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips in 2022. The issue will be composed of scientific articles and a technical note, which address in a broader perspective discussions around this theme for the current context, and may relate to the debate and consolidation of projects, public policies or research areas.

Copyright Notice

Declaration of responsibility 

The author must sign the declaration of responsibility, available in this Journal system, when submit the article. The author must agree with:

a) I agree to provide any data or information, related to the article, if requested by the editor for examination; 

b) I attest that all the authors participated of the production of the work, which made us responsible for the content.

If the article was written for more than one author, the declaration must specify each participation:

a) I participated in the conception and planning of the project, obtaining data or analyses; 

b) I participated in the writing of the article or in the critical review of it;

c) I participated in the final version approval of the article.


Copyright transfer

If the article is accepted for publication, the authors must sign the copyright transfer declaration and send it through the system of this Journal. In this declaration, the authors must expressly declare:

  • Declares to be in agreement that the copyright related to his work will become the exclusive property of the Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública, and assures that the referred work has not been published previously and is not being considered by another scientific publication.

Archiving in repositories

Authors are allowed to archive their respective texts in institutional repositories in their post-print version, that is, after approval and publication of the text in RBSP.

Licensing

The Brazilian Journal of Public Security uses Creative Commons License as a way of licensing its published works. The license used follows the CC BY 4.0 - Attribution 4.0 International model. Thus, this publication grants open access to its content, based on the principle that making scientific research freely available and accessible will result in greater circulation of information around the world.

Privacy Statement

In compliance with the regulations of Law 13.709, known as the General Law of Data Protection (LGPD), Revista Brasileira de Segurança Pública informs below the specific purpose of the data used and how they are being captured.

The names, addresses and general data informed through user registration and submission will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication (RBSP) and by the Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP), and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.

Among the purposes of data use can be mentioned:

  • Communication between the interested parties (RBSP and system users such as: authors, referees and registered readers of the journal), which will allow, for example, the user to receive the summary via e-mail with each new issue, or notifications related to the editorial flow.
  • Invitations and announcements related to FBSP publications, projects, research, and events, all related to the priority themes of the entity.
  • Scientific dissemination of the published texts and presentation of the data of the authors and co-authors as a demonstration of good publication practices and ethics in scientific journals (Email - chosen by the author himself to be disclosed; name; Orcid and institutional affiliation).

We inform that all information sent is saved in the OJS system (Open Journal System), being used by the editorial flow and accessed only by the technical team of the journal.
