The present article is the result of research conducted in Portugal, in the Public Security Police Force (PSP), on the relationship between police and young people in the perspective of the Integrated Program of Proximity Policing (Pipp), implemented in 2006, involving the actions of the Teams of the Safe School Program (Epes) and the Victim Support Teams (Epav). The approach encompasses the conceptions of the community policing model, which in Portugal has been called proximity policing. The use of this model, more than a philosophy of police work, indicates the action of a police force that has taken the first step toward community safety, in the search for better forms of relationship with young people, in favor of a citizen education based on dialog, information and the involvement of other social actors.
